If your social media consists of watching #cleantok videos, you might have heard that this community suffered a loss this summer. The viral BISSELL Steam Shot. We lost this cleaning tool to a safety recall in July and the cleaning community has been grieving ever since.

Some DIY cleaners are still using the device, but we don’t recommend it due to the burn risk. This might leave you wondering how you’re supposed to clean and sanitize your home. These four alternatives to the BISSELL Steam Shot can help you evict dirt and grime.

Why Is the BISSELL Steam Shot Discontinued?

Back in mid-July, BISSELL recalled 3.2 million of its Steam Shot devices in the U.S. (and about 355,000 in Canada). The reason? The steam cleaners could release hot water or steam in a way that posed a burn hazard. In fact, more than 150 people reported minor burns from the device.

To remedy this problem, BISSELL asked customers to immediately stop using the steamer. The brand has also offered a refund of $40 or a $60 credit at BISSELL.com for each product covered by the recall. Curious if you’re eligible for a refund? You can see the affected models for recalls.

If your device is eligible for a refund, BISSELL will ask you to follow several steps to get your money. You’ll take some photos of your device and fill out an online form. However, the hardest part (emotionally) is literally cutting the cord of your Steam Shot – or at least it was for me.

After submitting everything, you’ll receive a confirmation email and then wait up to six weeks for your refund. Once you have that money in hand, you can use it to buy an alternative BISSELL Steam Shot as a replacement.

Why Was the BISSELL Steam Shot So Popular?

The BISSELL Steam Shot quickly became an icon in the #cleantok space. It effectively harnessed the power of steam to clean homes in a way that was easy to do and satisfying to watch.

The device could clean almost every surface in your home, including those hard-to-reach places and pesky grout stains. Thanks to the use of heat and humidity, there was often no need to scrub because the grime just melted away. Not only that, but the heat also sanitized without harsh products like bleach. Basically, you could think of the BISSELL Steam Shot as the Swiss army knife of cleaning products.

What Are the Best BISSELL Steam Shot Alternatives?

People have been reluctant to let go of this little steam cleaner because it was so effective and versatile. While we know goodbyes are never easy, keeping this device around isn’t worth the burn risk. This is especially true when great BISSELL Steam Shot alternatives exist.
