Who he is

John MacArthur, now aged 86, has led Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, since 1969.

He is a pioneering Reformed Baptist pastor, broadcast preacher (“Grace to You”), and author of more than 150 theological works.

What’s happened

During the July 13 Sunday service, Associate Pastor Tom Patton shared that MacArthur had been hospitalized with pneumonia and “may be in the presence of the Lord soon”.His illness is considered life-threatening.

A history of health struggles

In early 2023 he experienced breathing issues and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, undergoing heart procedures.

Later that year and into 2024, he had multiple surgeries—three heart-related and a lung procedure—followed by a slow recovery with setbacks in his heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Despite these health battles, he returned to limited ministry in late 2024—and famously quipped in April, “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated”.

The Church speaks

At this Sunday’s service, Patton led a prayer for MacArthur and his family—wife Patricia, their four children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren—placing him “at the feet of the glorious Savior”.

He reminded the congregation of MacArthur’s lifelong devotion and impact: over 3,000 sermons delivered and a decades-long global influence through teaching and writing .

Why it matters

MacArthur isn’t just a pastor—he’s a generational voice, mentor, and steady guide in Evangelicalism.

His message on biblical teaching has touched millions, and many view him as a spiritual patriarch.

This news resonates personally with his congregation and across digital and radio platforms worldwide.

The road ahead

His condition remains serious. The church is urging continued prayer and emotional support for MacArthur and his entire family.

His journey highlights the vulnerability of even the most unwavering leaders and the comfort communities find in rallying together during adversity.
