Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said only three people have received Indian citizenship in Assam under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) while nine applications were under consideration. Speaking to reporters, he said, “There was apprehension fuelled by some people that lakhs of foreigners would get citizenship in Assam”. “We have received only 12 applications so far. The remaining nine applications are under consideration. There was a campaign that 20-25 lakh people would get citizenship in Assam. You can decide whether it is relevant to discuss CAA when we received only 12 applications,” he said.
