New Delhi: Chhattisgarh Police, along with central forces, killed a senior woman commander in an encounter in Dantewada on Monday and carried out an area domination exercise in Abujhmad in Narayanpur. The woman, identified as Gummadevli Renuka, carried a total reward of ₹45 lakh in two states, and belonged to Kadvaendi village in Warangal of Telangana, according to officials.

The deceased carried a reward of ₹25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and ₹20 lakh in Telangana, according to Bastar zone police.

The gunfight broke out at around 9 am in a forest along the border of Dantewada and Bijapur districts in Bastar region when District Reserve Guard personnel were carrying out an anti-Maoist operation, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said.

The operation was launched in the forested hills of Nelgoda, Ikeli and Belnar villages along the border of Geedam (Dantewada) and Bhairamgarh (Bijapur) based on inputs about the presence of Maoists, he said. The exchange of fire lasted for about two hours following which the police found the body of Gummadiveli Renuka, also known by aliases Bhanu, Chaite, Saraswati and Damyanti, he said. An Insas rifle, explosives, laptop and Maoist literature were recovered from the site, the official said.
