While many people look forward to Labor Day and the unofficial start to the Fall season for the barbeques, lake trips and football, savvy shoppers know it’s also a huge shopping weekend. Since many people have a three day weekend over Labor Day, retailers often offer major deals on big ticket items like mattresses and appliances. Plus, since it marks the end of summer, there are plenty of end-of-season sales to take advantage of, as well.
What to Expect From Labor Day Sales This Year
Labor Day long weekend (Aug. 31 – Sept. 2, 2024) typically is the time for summer clearance events. Many retailers offer end-of-the-season deals on a wide range of buys: flights, hotels, grills and outdoor furniture. You’ll also see markdowns on summer clothing, including swimsuits, shorts and sandals, as well as on outdoor toys and camping and hiking gear. And because Labor Day is a three-day weekend, retailers tend to offer deals on big-ticket buys like appliances and mattresses.
So whether you’re gearing up for fall or stocking up for summer next year, Labor Day is a good time to snap up products at a low price. Based on our survey data, shoppers plan to spend an average of $354 this Labor Day. These are the top five Labor Day 2024 shopping categories:

- Summer clothing & shoes, 43% (up from 29% last year)
- Fall/winter clothing & shoes, 41% (up from 23% last year)
- Home appliances & furniture, 34%

When Do Labor Day Sales Start?
We typically see Labor Day messaging and deals launching a week or more prior to the actual holiday. So keep an eye out early, starting the last few days of August.
