While China is known for its mega hydroelectric plants and giant thermal power projects not only on its land but in many other countries as well, it has set a record by switching on the world’s largest solar plant, which has more than five million panels. According to the TCD, the government-controlled China Green Electricity Investment of Tianjin has switched on the 3.5 GW Midong PV farm in Urumqi, Xinjiang region. It is a subsidiary of China Green Development Group (CGDG). China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) invested a massive amount of CNY 15.45 billion in this project.

Solar plant with 5.26 million PV panels

It has 5.26 million 650 W monocrystalline bifacial double-glass PV panels that will generate about 6.09 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The PV plant spread over 32,947 acres, can produce electricity that will be enough for Papua New Guinea for a whole year.

World’s largest solar plant

According to the International Energy Agency, solar power constitutes about about 4.5% of global electricity generated in 2022. China has the lion’s share of 38% in the new generation capacity added during 2022, while the share of the European Union and the US is 17% and 15% respectively.

The extensive infrastructure of the world’s largest project in the Chinese province of Xinxiang has 1.23 million supporting piles, five 220 kV booster stations, and more than 208 km of transmission lines connected to the grid via a 750 kV substation.
